Informational Meeting to Present the Recently Revised Lawton Farm Management Plan - Wildlife Conservation Issues at Lawton Farm Shape Permissible Uses
The Scituate Conservation Commission will host an informational meeting to present the recently revised Lawton Farm Management Plan (the Plan) on Tuesday, May 11th at 7:00pm at the Hope Elementary School, 391 North Road (Route 116), in the Village of Hope. Lawton Farm is owned by the Town of Scituate and is managed by the Town Conservation Commission as a conservation area. The Plan was approved by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) in September and the Scituate Town Council in November. Based upon use patterns in recent years and lax enforcement of restrictions, revisions to the Plan were necessary. The informational meeting will focus on changes to the plan and upcoming enforcement measures that will be taken.

The original management plan was written in 1990 when the property was acquired by the Town of Scituate. RIDEM requires a management plan as a condition of the grant used by the Town to purchase the property. In addition, RIDEM holds a conservation easement on the majority of Lawton Farm that mandates the property be managed as a wildlife conservation area and prescribes permissible uses. The Plan must be consistent with the terms of the conservation easement and must be approved by RIDEM, allowing passive recreational uses only such as walking, cross-country skiing, nature observation, environmental education, and agriculture. The 1990 management plan included public use restrictions to comply with management and maintenance of the open fields that provide nesting habitat to grassland nesting birds. Grassland nesting bird habitat has been in severe decline in recent years, with birds such as the Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolink being listed as species of greatest conservation concern. The primary purpose in conserving Lawton Farm is to provide the much needed nesting habitat to grassland nesting birds.  As such, the original plan prohibited all access to the property during nesting season from April through August.

Primary changes to the Plan now allow access to pedestrians on paths along the perimeter of the property during nesting season.  Parking will be limited during nesting season to control the number of cars on the property. No dogs will be allowed anywhere on the property during the nesting season from April through August. In order to maintain conservation restrictions, only leashed dogs will be allowed during the remainder of the year (September through March). The presence of horses at Lawton Farm is also prohibited due to observed erosion and water quality concerns.

In addition to a presentation of the changes to the plan, the informational meeting will focus on ways in which Lawton Farm supporters can assist the Commission in its efforts to conserve Lawton's wildlife habitat. A copy of this 2009 management plan is available for review at the Scituate Town Hall and on this website --
